Jane Seymour Star Week

Born Joyce Penelope Wilhemina Frankenberg on February 15, 1951, in Middlesex, England, Jane Seymour has continually entertained viewing audiences since 1969. After 30 years of service to the film and movie industry, as well as to the numerous charities and children of the world, she was finally recognized. The ceremony was held on April 20th, 1999, which is now Official Jane Seymour Day in Hollywood, and hundreds were there -- almost all of her family, immediate and extended, some cast of DQ (Frank Collison - Horace, Brandon Douglas - Dr. Andrew Cook, and Joe Lando - Sully, as well as the Calabrese triplets who played Katie), many of Jane's friends from over the years, and a lot of TV coverage.

This is my report from Star Week, but let me begin by saying that it was definitely one of the best times of my life. It was great finally being able to meet the people who had before, only been faceless screen names. There was a great sense of "family" there. It was only heightened by the feeling of camaraderie and comfort all of us felt in each other's presence. Add to that the openness and welcome from Jane and the rest of the actors at the BBQ, as well as Lee, Bob, and their son, Bryan, (background actors) the first and all subsequent days, and you have a fantastic week!

ARRIVAL

I arrived at LAX at 5pm on Saturday, April 17th, and was met by Janine D. and her mother (who had a very interesting time in LA - more on that later) who took me to the Hollywood Roosevelt where I met Megs in the lobby. We went up to Megs' room, where I was staying the first night, since my roommate (Mary Rath) wasn't arriving until Sunday, and I dumped my bags as we prepared to go to supper. I also met Barb Baer and Cheryl Sanders, and all of us but Cheryl went to the Hamburger Hamlet (the hangout in the area, where stars are known for appearing).

There were 6 of us (Megs, Barb, Rachel, Inna, Rachel's dad, and me). Barb and I sat at the heads of the table, then remarked out loud that we were special, just as the waiter came up to hand us our menus. He handed one to Barb, saying "Your Highness." When he got around to me, I said, "If she's a 'highness', I don't want to think about what that makes me," to which the waiter replied and said, "Your Majesty." He then, went to Megs and Inna, saying, "Princess, and My Liege," respectively. We all laughed at this, and he left to be replaced by our waiter.

The rest of our meal was nice, except for the fact that it seemed to take forever for them to bring out the food once we had ordered. It wasn't a problem though, since we chatted about everything that had happened so far that day, as well as DQ. Did you think we could avoid it? One interesting thing was when Rachel's Dad posed a question to all of us. Now, realize that he is not a Quinnatic, but he does know something about the show, and he appreciates the actors. So, he asked all of us to give him the second line spoken by the third actor in the first scene after the second commerical in the sixteenth episode of the first season. Now, we had no idea what this was, so Megs replied, "That was the extra that went, 'Ah!'" to which we all laughed.

We discussed the DQ moments in Sara Davidson's book, focusing on the episode Mothers And Daughters, of course. We then all agreed that it was NOT a book for young readers. From there, we discussed various other things, just reveling in being in LA and Hollywood. We talked about what was going to be happening, and even planned to either go to the pool after we eat or across to the Mann's Chinese Theatre to see the hand and feet prints of the many famous people there. We ended up going to Mann's, since they took so long in getting us our food, and we didn't have time to get to the pool before it closed.

We all made sure to stay together, since it was after 8:30 pm and dark, and in LA, it's not wise to be in small groups. However, once we got over to the Theatre, Barb and I noticed that Megs wasn't with us. We were worried, so Barb and I went to look for her, while the other 3 stayed back. We finally found the "sneak" back in the lobby talking to none other than Lee, Bob, and Bryan Smith (background actors from Dr. Quinn)! She could have at least let us know she was talking to some famous people! Anyway, she introduced us, and Lee told us to come back to Rm. 601 for a party.

When we got to the room, the party had already begun, and we squeezed in where we could. Bob (or Chance as he was also known) saw me and pointed to the corner. I asked him if I was being punished and if I had to face the corner too, and he smiled, then said that I didn't. Once there, I met Anne G. (who is known for taking fantastic pictures from the set) and she showed us some pix she was selling. I bought some great ones, then paid attention to what was going on in the room. Pam was showcasing everything that would be for sale at video night and various other times, as well as info. on the raffles, and basic stuff about the events. We all hung in there for a few hours, then headed back to our rooms around midnight.

In our room, we fell asleep around 12:30, but around 3:30, I woke up to Cheryl's snoring! She wasn't having a good night with sinus problems and other things, so I forgave her. Anyway, I couldn't get back to sleep because I was too excited, so I just laid there for about an hour. Finally, around 4:00, Megs woke up, and we talked for about an hour. Around 5am, we decided to go to the lobby, since we were probably keeping up Cheryl and Barb. So, we went downstairs so that Megs could write and I could finish my sketch for Jane (more on that later).

Around 7 or so, others came down and talked on their way to breakfast. I had breakfast with Almarinda, Bob, and Theresa N., and Megs left to get ready. Afterwards, I went upstairs to get ready for the BBQ and to meet Mary in the lobby at 9am. However, she was delayed, so I met Jeanne S., and Cheryl F. in the lobby. Jeanne left with Megs and two others. I met Phyllis and Pam. Cheryl offered to give me a lift to the P-Ranch and I left a note for Mary at the front desk.

BBQ

All the way to the P-Ranch, I kept making note in my mind of familiar places from the two times I had visited in 1997 and 1998. It was all coming back as we drove, but it didn't really hit me until we drove over the bridge and into the parking lot. Bob was there directing us (he, his son, Bryan, and Jim P. were the main security for the week), and we parked, then got out. We immediately met Judy and Mike T., so walked over and talked to them. Then, we walked into town, past the Clinic and around the corner, then past the Barber Shop and around the Feed and Grain to the Pavilion where the BBQ would take place. We met others there, then helped Pam put the finishing touches on everything as we prepared for the BBQ to start. They made the announcement for those of us here to sign in and get our "stars" on our badges so that we wouldn't get kicked out.

Everyone else began to arrive, and it was like one big reunion as we met several people. Tony Penido was there with his SUV, and here is where I met Kathy P., Erin K., and several others. We all chatted for a bit, then looked over at the line forming around Tony. He had set up his display of original sketches of the town of "Colorado Springs" and various building to take orders, but since he was actually distributing the previous prints (1-4), the park ranger stopped him, and asked him not to do it. He was only mildly "ticked", but he obeyed. After all, it was a state park, and by law, you're not allowed to sell anything for profit there. That's why the raffle ticket sales were canceled, and why Pam had to give one free ticket to everyone. He ended up being at the "Video night" Sunday night to complete his sales, though.

However, the mild frustration was soon forgotten, since not long after Frank Collison arrived with his wife and three kids. This is where I was rheally excited, since I had met him two years earlier, but had also been talking to him online since. When he saw me, he remembered me by my screen name, so I had to remind him of my name. He was very happy to see me again, introducing me to his wife and telling her that I had been keeping him updated on what was going on with the DQ Discussion List. I got a picture with him and his autograph on a script of the Library, talked a few minutes more about his most recent play (he had to leave early for a matinee), then I left.  He stuck around as long as he could, signing autographs and having a little fun with Jonelle.

That's when Jane arrived in her Range Rover. There were some people who swarmed her as soon as she came in, and the twins were scared silly at the onslaught, but soon recovered enough to play and have a good time. Jane very soon after went directly back to the table to sign autographs for 2-3 hours straight! She did take a short break to eat. I wouldn't have known about this, but I was walking around for a bit when I came upon her, sitting behind the back wall of the pavilion and eating. I apologized, then did what I'm known best for doing -- sticking my foot in my mouth! I looked at her, smiled, and said, "I guess you don't want the cameras going off now, right?" She smiled and agreed. I apologized again, and left her alone. Soon after, she returned and went back to talking, taking pictures, and signing autographs. She really is a classy lady to be so gracious in doing all of this. She had tried to eat with her sisters and mother, but people were watching her eat, and waiting for her to get done, so she left.

Anyway, back to the story. Once Jane sat down at the autograph table, there was a long line that formed. Erin and I decided to stand in line, anyway, since the line would only get longer. We hadn't been in line for maybe 2-3 minutes when Barbara Babcock (Dorothy) arrived. She sort of snuck in without being noticed, until some of us saw her standing right in front of us! She looked great and very young. You would think that woman never ages! Anyway, she asked about the line, and we told her the table was up there for signing, so she took a few quick pictures, then said she had better get up there, too, so she left. We continued to stand in line, and as we moved forward, the line began to split, so that one went to Barbara, and one to Jane. Jonelle Allen (Grace) arrived, too, and Frank (Horace) joined her at the other end of Jane's table. Now, there were four lines. Erin and I laughed, saying that we would be there a while.

After that, we just waited, until it was finally our turn with Jane. She remembered me when she saw me, and said, "Hi! Glad you could make it! Any more hand-stenciled cards?" Now to explain, I have made some stenciled cards in the past and sent them out to the cast and some members of the crew on several occasions. Jane remembered that I was the one who did these, but I was very surprised that she even mentioned them! I told her that I had made another one for her which she would receive later, and she nodded, then signed my script and took a picture with Erin and me. She asked where we get the scripts, and I told her that Pam had some. We sat on either side of her and got pix with both of our cameras, thanks to Inna!

After that, we went through the lines to get autographs of and pix with Barbara and Jonelle. While we were standing in line for Jane and almost to the table, Frank and Jonelle exchanged words about one of them being crazy, then Jonelle laughed loudly when Frank made as if to sign on Jonelle's bare arm. They were really funny together. Barbara was great, and very friendly. She talked amicably with everyone. Megs was right in front of me, and asked if I would take a pic of her and Barbara, but then Jessica (Colleen) arrived, so Megs showed her where to sign in, then explained to her that she could sign first or eat. She chose to eat, and then Megs came back. When we got to Jonelle, I was amazed at how young she looked. She was very beautiful with her hair down. Once she signed, she said, "I'm going to get Robert E," and everyone laughed. I guess it was because he wasn't there with her to sign, but it was funny.

Later, in a break between standing in line, Erin and I talked with Carl Binder (producer and writer) and Jonelle, and Frank threw an empty water bottle at her from behind. He was getting ready to leave, so he came to say goodbye. They exchanged a hug, and he left. Jonelle and Carl were talking about the DQ movie, making comments about certain things being left hanging and not even mentioned (especially in regard to Grace and Robert E). They were both confused, and I could tell that Jonelle was a little upset that some things had been unresolved.

Then, Carl asked Jonelle if she knew about his newest show, Little Men. She sort of acknowledged it, and he went on to say that there was a housekeeper who had a big part. Carl said that the actress had more than once told Carl that she loved the character of Grace on DQ, and asked if he could write stuff for her like what was done for Grace. She winked at me and asked Carl, "Then, why am I not playing that part?" She smiled, though, so Carl knew she was joking. That was when Frank threw the water bottle, said goodbye and left.

After that, Jonelle left, and Erin and I asked if we could get a picture with Carl. I had him sign my script, even though he didn't write it, and then we went back to get in line. During this time, Shawn Toovey (Brian) and Brandon Douglas (Dr. Andrew Cook) had arrived, so we got in line to talk with them. Orson Bean (Loren) and Alley Mills (Marjorie Quinn) arrived soon after, along with Chaz (Wolf).

When we were almost to Brandon, he looked up and saw me, waved and smiled, saying, "Hey, Tiff." Thanks to Megs, he knew that I was there, so I guess he was waiting for when I would come and talk to him. I had met him on a previous trip to the set in 1997 and we had kept in touch since. He took a picture with the lady in front of me, then waved me forward. I asked him to sign the script, even though it was two seasons before his time, and he said, "Well, I don't know if I want to sign it," to which I replied, "And I don't know if I want a picture with you!" He smiled, then signed the script, telling me to come around for the picture. I hesitated, but when he got up as if he was going to come after me, I went around and said, "No, no, stay where you are. No sense you making a fool of yourself!"

He stood up, and I joked, "Oh sure, stand up and make me look even shorter," to which he replied, "Do you want me to sit down?" I said, "No, stand up," and he said, "Boy, you redheads are so hard to please," then Erin took our picture. He squeezed my waist and said it was good seeing me again, then told me to stop by to talk again when I had the chance. Erin was next, and once that was done, we got Shawn's autograph and picture. I joked at how much my younger brother resembled him, and told Shawn I would have to be sure to show this picture to my brother. It was uncanny!

Once that was done, Erin and I decided to eat something, and once we sat down, Jessica Bowman (Colleen) came to sit right next to Rachel (Erika Flores Fan #1) at the tables. This was really ironic, and I got a good laugh at the expression on Rachel's face when that happened. She did end up talking briefly, and once Erin and I were finished, we walked over to get back in line. We saw David Beecroft (Sgt. McKay) sitting at the end of one table with his wife of one year and their baby boy. He didn't really walk around much or go to the table to sign, but I did eventually get his autograph, not his picture.

By this time, Jessica was signing where Barbara had been (she had left already), so we went to Jessica's line. Then, this was when Jane had taken a break, we got in line for Jim. He looked rheally different with blond hair, but still looked good. After that, we went over to stand for Orson Bean (Loren) and Alley Mills (Marjorie), only they were leaving before we got a picture with them, so I got a picture of the two of them. Somewhere in here, Henry G. Sanders (Robert E) had arrived, and we stood in line for him too. Rachel asked him what the "E" in his character's name represented, and he said that it was along the lines of "Malcolm X" since Robert E was a pioneer in his own right. I asked if it was named after General Robert E. Lee, and he said that partially, it was. I also told him about what Jonelle had said about him, and he looked upset that he had missed her, but it was funny when he found out what she had said.

From there, we stood in line for Beth Sullivan, who had arrived a little while ago with Jim Knobeloch (Jake) and their twins, Tess and Jack, who were adorable. Beth had a lot of interruptions, so this line took a while, and before we got there, Pam announced that it was Orson and Alley's sixth anniversary, David and Greer Beecroft's first anniversary, as well as Frank Collison's oldest daughter's birthday. So, we sang "Happy Anniversary" and "Happy Birthday" to all of them.

Finally, we got to the table with Beth, and I had her sign my script. She also asked where we got these, and I told her. She wasn't too surprised, but happy we could get a hold of them. While I waited, she was interrupted several times, but finally got to signing. She asked if I just wanted signatures or notes, and I said that she could write whatever she wanted, so she wrote a little "thank you" note and signed it. Then, I got set for a picture, only I ended up sitting next to her and talking amongst several others who had come to chat. That's when I saw Eric Michael Zee (Peter Chung) come up behind me. I asked him if he could sign, and he did. I asked him, "Where is your lovely bride?" and he replied, "Over in the shade with our lovely dog!" I smiled, and he said it was really hot, so they had to leave to take their dog home. If you don't know already, Eric is married to Ming Na Wen (the voice of Disney's Mulan), and she's just as beautiful in person as her voice.

Finally, I got my picture with Beth. She gave me a hug, thanked me (along with other fans) for our support and devotion that kept the show running for six seasons. After that, I went over to get a picture with Chaz (Wolf) and the trainer had him sit up. He was obviously very hot, so he was resting, but he sat up for a picture. A little boy came up to pet Chaz, and his father told him to "wait for the lady to get her picture." When I finished, the boy's father told him to be gentle. I was laughing at the little boy, and thinking to myself how familiar his father seemed, when I looked at the back of the boy's shirt where his badge was and saw "Lower"! I knew there couldn't be two Lower's at the BBQ, so I stood up and looked at him. He smiled, saying he knew I had figured out who he was.  He looked so different without his beard, and only some scruff on his face where his beard had been, but I talked to him and asked him if he could sign my script. When he looked at it, he grimaced, saying, "Oooh, I was a meanie in this one." I said, "Yes, but it was still a great episode," to which he replied, "Yes, it was. It had a great message." I heartily agreed. Once he signed it, I took a picture with him, then asked him if he had signed in at the table. He said he had, Erin got her picture with him, and we both said goodbye.

Finally, we were done! Phew! And it was only 3:30pm! It felt so much later, but I wasn't complaining. I loved the fact that the day was going so slowly. After this, we put our things away, then walked up to talk to Jane about a Dr. Quinn Memory Book on which I (and 3 others) had worked very hard to complete. We apologized that we weren't able to give it to her in person, but assured her it would be delivered to her as soon as we could finish it.

She talked about her artwork, saying she had done some self-portraits for the raffle. I told her I had seen them, and when she acted surprised, I told her I had helped set up, which she understood. I asked her how she had started her water-color painting, and she said it was more of a hobby, but since her originals sell for thousands of dollars, it had become more for charity, now.

Sometime in the midst of everything, I had a chance to talk to Jane, semi-privately, about my DQ Movie Bash the weekend of the movie, and she seemed really interested. I told her how the one main meal we would be serving would be completely DQ-related, then told her about the games, trivia, prizes, etc., and she thought it sounded like a lot of fun. At that time, I didn't know that she was going to be in NY, presenting at the Daytime Emmy awards, or I would have told her to come for a visit! Just kidding. But, she did say it sounded like a great idea, and she hoped we would have a lot of fun. I assured her I would try to get some highlights out to her afterward, and she said she would be looking forward to hearing about it, as well as our reactions to the movie. I was really thrilled, and she told me she really appreciated what I had sent her in the past (cards and quilt and other misc. gifts), and was genuinely glad to finally get to know everyone who had only been names before (even if she had met them at the P-Ranch or booksignings or interviews, etc.). I'm sure she said it to many others, and I know she expressed it publicly, but she was really impressed with everything that had been done for this event, and was grateful for everyone coming out to the events.

Finally, Erin and I got back together to walk around town. I gave her a semi-general tour, pointing out where the two homesteads had been, but we didn't go there, since I don't think I could have handled seeing bare lots. It was bad enough seeing the signs all down in town, the windows boarded up, and the church, school, and graveyard all gone; I don't know if I could have taken much more.  It was different enough at filming for the movie, but at least then, the town looked "normal."  At any rate, we both switched cameras to get pix of each other in front of each building. We saw Henry walk by as he was leaving, and I saw the Calabrese triplets peaking through the gate in-between the general store and the barber shop, but Tami (their mother) quickly called them back.

We ended up back at the train station for our last picture, and saw Jane leave with her family in her Range Rover. She waved as she drove past. After that, we walked back to the pavilion, since it was about 4:15, and the BBQ would be ending soon. Here is where I saw the Calabrese Triplets again. This time, they were in their stroller. When I first saw them, they were up on the stage at the front of the pavilion, playing and having fun. They had also played around, squirting each other with water, but that was quickly squelched. Anyway, I was going to get a picture of just them, but Tami, their mother, said I should stand behind the stroller. Lexi was being silly, and when their mom asked them to put their hands in their laps, Lexi covered up her eyes, acting bashful. I leaned over her head (she was in the middle of Megan and McKenzie) and said, "If you don't put your hands in your lap, I'm going to tickle you," and she immediately put her hands down.

Once the picture was taken, she turned around to look up at me, and she smiled. I reached down to tickle her, and she giggled, squirming to avoid my fingers. Megan and McKenzie were giggling too, and Megan, as usual, had a huge grin on her face. Once that was done (the raffle had been going on for the past hour-and-a-half), everything came to an end, and everyone went into clean-up mode to clear the leftover items and get ready to go home. A lot of people had already left, but most of the fans were still there. I found Cheryl F. again, and asked her if she knew of anyone going to Malibu Creek State Park tomorrow. She said she was, and offered to bring me, so we could get pictures. I thanked her, then went to find my ride, Mary R., so we could get back to check into our room. Barb B. rode with us, and we went back to the hotel.

VIDEO NIGHT

I spent a little time in the pool (mostly the Jacuzzi) while waiting for "Video" Night. Even though no videos were shown (the hotel wanted something like $4,000 dollars or an equally incredible amount to get the big-screen tv and VCR), it was still a lot of fun. The first part was just talking and sharing of scrapbooks, while looking at the tables of things for sale. Tony Penido came to finish his sales from the BBQ, and I bought a few scripts to add to the ones Frank gave me at the BBQ, as well as the flower note cards done by Jane. There were snacks and drinks, and after about an hour-and-a-half, Pam told everyone who was wearing their STAR week t-shirts to gather for a picture. I took Fiona's camera (I had met her and many others at the BBQ) to get a picture for her. I hadn't bought one of the t-shirts since it was black, and I knew I would never wear it (I look like a ghost in black! I did buy one later, though, for my collection.

Once that was done, Lee Smith, along with Bob, Bryan, Julie B., Sully's stand-in (I don't remember his name) and one other background actor, gathered for a Q & A time from us. They told us about bloopers and favorite moments as well as a lot of behind-the-scene information. But, it would take too long to go into specifics here. The best part of the night was when Lee talked about the "men" of DQ, and told us how they're all her family, whether her "brothers" or "sons", and even William Shockley, who's her "man!" What a hoot that woman is!

Everything wrapped up, and most of us left, knowing we had to get up early for breakfast with Jane tomorrow morning, doors opening at 7:30am! It was midnight, now!

JANE BREAKFAST

I woke up around 6:30 to get ready. The doors opened at 7:30, and I wanted to get there early. However, by the time I got downstairs, I realized I wasn't the only one there early. It seemed that most of us wanted to get a head start. Well, some friends had saved me a seat, directly to the right of Jane and the head table, so I joined them with Erin K. and her mother. While we waited, we passed the time talking about last night, as well as the BBQ, and everything that had happened already.

Finally, we were told that Jane would be a bit late, as she was downstairs getting her make-up done. As if that woman needs make-up! When she did arrive, as many others have already said, she just sort of stood there in the doorway, obviously shocked by either the amount of people present, the elaboration of the room and clothing, or both. My guess was both, since she remarked, "I had no idea we would be getting so dressed up."

As usual, she looked gorgeous in a light-pink Escada pant-suit, with a matching scarf. Her hair was down and hanging straight. No one has the right to look that good that early in the morning! We had taken some bets at our table on what color she would be wearing, and well, none of us were right. We were betting blue or purple, and she comes in pink, outsmarting us all. When she walked in and saw everyone, she stated, "Wow, you all clean up nice!" (having seen us yesterday in shorts and t-shirts) to which someone yelled, "Pam made us!" That brought a laugh from everyone, as well as Jane.

When she and her mother and sisters were led up to the head table, she remarked, "Up here, away from everybody?" You could tell she wasn't really too fond of being so removed from her fans. Once they were all seated, she apologized for being late, but she, "had a little domestic problem." When asked who it was, she replied, "Sean," but didn't elaborate any further, nor did we want her to. She also apologized for James not being able to make it, but "he is editing Dr. Quinn. And since we all know how much you want Dr. Quinn to be great, we knew you would forgive him." At that, we all clapped, and agreed.

Just a little insert here: because Jane hadn't brought the number of guests slated to come with her, our table moved to the one reserved for those guests. Others followed suit and soon the tables around Jane were once again filled. Once that was done, she and her mother and sisters were invited to go to the buffet line, but Jane held back for a bit, choosing instead to stop and chat briefly. We were the first table to go from the guests. As soon as I got back to the table, I had to leave to fix my dress, and when I returned, I almost ran into Jane, coming back from the buffet. There were these large pillars in the middle of the rooms, and they were covered on all four sides by mirrors. I was entering the room from the main door, and as I approached the first pillar, Jane came around the opposite side, on a direct collision course with my path!

I saw her just in time, though, as she was about two feet from me. We both came to an immediate halt, and she said, "Whoa!" as she tried to keep her two plates balanced (one was completely fruit, and the other was for her mother). I laughed and said, "Flash isn't here, Dr. Mike, but you can go ahead of me." She chuckled and smiled, thanked me, then proceeded ahead of me to her table. When we were both seated, she caught my eye and we both smiled. Looking back, now, though, I can't believe I said that to her! Just chalk it up with the many other things I said when I thought quick on my feet and threw in some line of wit, most of the time sticking my entire foot in my mouth!

Jane ate her fruit -- she told those in line she was trying to limit the meat in her diet and eat healthy, pointing at the eggs, bacon and pancakes and saying, "That stuff will kill you!" Guess they felt great hearing her say that, especially since they had that "stuff" on their plates -- and got up to walk around. She wanted to be sure to visit each and every table, individually. She really didn't like being removed from those gathered. Since there were some tables who hadn't gone up to the line yet, she visited some of those first, remarking, "Where's your food?" Most just said Mary would be coming to them soon, so Jane stayed and talked to them, graciously posing for pictures and signing autographs.

When she came to our table, we jokingly thanked her for reserving this special table for us, and she laughed, saying, "You're quite welcome. It's nice to do something for my fans." She asked us how we were enjoying our breakfast and Star Week so far, and we all responded, enthusiastically! When she was standing directly behind me, to my left, I told her about the sketch I had done of her, and she said, "Well, please show it to me," so I pulled it out of the bag.

When she looked at it, she said, "Wow! This is good! You got the Clinic just perfect! Where did you get that pose of me? I don't remember standing like that in front of the Clinic for any episode." I told her I had gotten the tilt of her face from Last Dance when she and Sully were in the wagon, looking at the Red Rocks, and the rest, I drew from memory. I had touched it up at the set during the BBQ, just to get it right.

She seemed very impressed and said, "You know, I always feel bad when fans send me their artwork. There is only so much wall space for all of the things I get, and while I have a lot of it hanging up in a special room, along with the international quilt I received last year, I want to tell everyone to go to Kinko's and make a copy. Then, they can still have their work, and I can too. Obviously, you all spend a lot of time on these, and I feel badly taking them."

I told her I didn't mind, since I wasn't going to do anything with it. However, I did get a picture with her holding it, and our arms around each other's backs. I said I would keep that special treasure, and she could keep the framed sketch. She laughed and agreed, saying she would look forward to receiving it, then she took pictures/chatted with others at the table, and moved to the next table.

A little while later, Pam began the raffle. Lorri came around and sold tickets, and I bought two, thinking to myself that it was for a good cause, so, "why not?" Well, Pam began by introducing the grand prize, a limited edition rendering of the famous "Is It You" scene from Somewhere in Time. I remember looking down at the table at my two tickets and thinking to myself, "I'll never win anything." Just as I read the last three digits on my ticket, I heard them being called out loud. I sat there and stared, the reality not really hitting me, even when I heard the numbers being called again. It took Erin pointing to my ticket and saying I won for me to realize that my numbers had been called!

I stood up, in a hurry, hesitated, because I wasn't sure where I was supposed to go -- the rendering was displayed at the back of the room, and Pam was at the main table up front -- walked up front to show my ticket, then walked to the back to claim my prize. A man nearby (whom I would later come to realize was a man from England who had come here with his wife) had a camera and wanted a picture with me holding the rendering, so I paused. I happened to notice that Jane had stopped what she was doing to see who had won, and she smiled at me from across the room as she caught my eye. I smiled back, then went back to my seat.

I heard various comments from around me like, "Lucky!", "You dog!" (that was from one of my really good friends), "Ooh, I'm jealous!", and "Can I see it?" I was so shocked I had won the grand prize, that I don't remember much of what happened in those few moments. I am usually upbeat, so that went right along with my normal reactions! Must have also been surprise!

Anyway, the raffle went on, and three others from our table won items. Pam remarked that the raffle was fixed. I think it was just the special, "reserved" table. The raffle included everything from scripts of Mothers & Daughters, To Have and to Hold, Revolutions (the new movie), and others, to note cards from City Hearts, bumper stickers, and Korbel Champagne bottles that Jane had designed.

Once the raffle was done, they announced the winners of the "silent auction" that had been going on from the beginning until 10am. Pat B. won the famed "Sully jacket", and I don't remember who won everything else. I suppose that tells you where my mind was during the announcements for that auction! Finally, the raffle was done, and Jane said she had to leave. She had the opportunity to take her mother to a special exhibit on the Holocaust, and with her mother being a concentration camp survivor, this was a very special event. It was the only time Jane could go, so she took some time to thank everyone who came, expressing her heartfelt wishes for a good afternoon, and told us she would see us tomorrow.

Before she left, though, there was a very special performance from a traveling "youth" choir who was in town for performances and a competition. The lady in charge had learned that Jane was in the hotel and secured permission to have her group perform for Jane. They did a beautiful job on three songs, and we all gave them a standing ovation when they were finished. Wow! What a special moment to have Jane give you a standing ovation!

At the end, those of us who had donated money to the STAR directly, stood in line to get a self-portrait of Jane as Michaela (it's the one for October from the German calender of 1999), a very nice gift coming from Jane for her appreciation. I also took one or two flowers from her main table to press for saving, met a few people up front to get a ride to Planet Hollywood Tuesday night, then prepared to leave.

Before I did, though, I was approached by Janine B., the co-creator of the international quilt Jane received for her birthday last year. We chatted for a few minutes, then I took a picture of her, Jodie (who will be famous tomorrow night) and Julie (the violinist), then left. I had to hurry upstairs to change for the afternoon, since I had to meet Cheryl F. to go out to Malibu Creek State Park that afternoon. First, I had to record a video message for Jane.
